Urban weed control with 60% less herbicide usage? Yes we can!

Controlling urban weeds and getting rid of invasive weeds is a necessary operation for many industries. For instance, on development and construction sites Japanese knotweed will bring any project to a halt. Landowners and estate owners have a legal obligation to control or remove certain weeds covered by legislation – such as Ragwort. Property managers are required to maintain external grounds to a high standard as part of their management fee, and councils must keep urban highways and public spaces clear. So weed management cannot be ignored and for lots of reasons.

Why Glyphosate?

Glyphosate is still the best and safest herbicide when it comes to dealing with invasive and annual weeds, but it’s not the only chemical we use, as some invasive plants respond better to other products or methods. We’re uniquely placed to have an in-house BASIS advisor who ensures that the best herbicide is always chosen and used in the most efficient way, and with a focus on minimising usage through an integrated approach.

Can you innovate weed control?

Yes, changing the way herbicides are used or mixed with adjuvants is always a key factor in the efficacy of the chemical, and we’re always looking to improve on methods of delivery too. Below we share some innovative achievements made this year as we enter our 15th year of trading. We’re taking the weed control industry to a more sustainable level, which is better for our clients and better for the environment. But first, an introduction.

At Japanese Knotweed Ltd we don’t just remove knotweed. Through our Environment Controls brand we offer a wide range of specialist weed control and contaminated land removal services.

Not just knotweed! Though we started out as knotweed contractors, we now cover a vast range of other invasive plants (and species such as Oak Processionary Moth). Our surveyors are highly trained to spot these, and we can quote for everything that’s found on the same contract, which is both effective and efficient. We’re also licensed to detect asbestos in soils – which we can remove at the same time. Ultimately using one contractor for all contamination saves on time, resource management and costs.

Why is weed control such a big concern for industries?

Construction and development are big target markets for invasive weed removal, and there’s a fairly large pool of contractors to choose from. So, we asked our long-term clients why they repeatedly come back to us.

  • They value our bespoke quotation and report writing. All our quotes include a report from the site survey which covers a breakdown of our recommendations for the proposed contract. This is all site-specific directly to the client’s needs and includes an equally bespoke RAMs.
  • They say they value our end-to-end consultation. Vast in-house expertise and knowledge enables our teams to provide specific advice and information from initial contact at the time of quote and right through to contract delivery. Starting with a two-way consultation that gets the project off on the best foot.

It gives our client the opportunity to share key information of the project and the site with our team so that any areas of concern or consideration can be discussed, and we can bring to light other aspects whilst explaining the process of excavation to the client – keeping them fully informed from the get-go assists with project decision making.

Amenity weed control is of increasing importance to councils, local authorities and property management agents. If not carried out correctly urban highways and public spaces can be left unsightly with overgrown or poorly treated weed growth. Whilst it’s essential to have weeds under control we understand the challenges that our clients face when budgeting.

There are quadbikes and then there’s our quadbikes!

This is why we have specifically designed new equipment and created a system that is not only more cost effective for our clients but more efficient and sustainable. Our new suite of Quadbikes uses a special herbicide mix that is more effective, which, when combined with controlled ultra-low volume spraying and reduced active ingredient – is a win-win. This tech and methodology has been designed especially to ensure faster and more efficient contract completion for our clients, and has the added benefits of using less chemicals, less water and is a more sustainable option.

What’s the fuss about moss?

Additionally, Moss and Algae can be a hazard risk in winter, but we’ve developed a method where both can be treated at the same time as amenity spraying for annual and perennial weeds via knapsacking. This treatment method is unique to Environment Controls and not only is it more efficient but costs less – a saving we pass on to you.

The benefits include;

  • more efficient moss and annual weed control
  • reduced herbicide usage (up to 60% less)
  • faster contract completion
  • avoid hazard risk

Getting moss treated before it becomes a problem helps to avoid complaints and potential H&S issues, because it can form on most hard surfaces, and for councils the areas particularly affected include:

  • Roads, footpaths & steps
  • Play areas
  • MUGAs (Multi-Use Games Areas)
  • Amenity spaces
  • Outdoor furniture on playparks
